The health of our planet depends on the health of its ecosystems and sustainable agriculture is key to maintaining that health. The goal of sustainable agriculture should be to regenerate the soil and the ecosystem, not just to maintain them.
We must plant the seeds of change and nurture them daily through our actions and choices. "Sustainable agriculture is not just about growing crops, it's about caring for the soil, the water, the air and all the living things that depend on them." Vandana Shiva. The greatest threat to our planet is the belief that someone else will save it. We must shift our emphasis from economic efficiency to life efficiency. We are neighbors on this small planet village. What happens to one affects us all.
Worldwide, prosperity is being reversed. There is less food security, less health security, less income and greater inequality. Agrifood supply chains and value chains must be strengthened with engagement of public and private sector in support of smallholder farmers and households. It is time to change the way we think.
Farmers are not the cause of Africa’s poverty; they are a potential solution. They are key to creating the future envisioned by the 17 SDGs. If we empower smallholder farmers to achieve their aspirations, they will do the heavy lifting of development themselves and nation and globe at large.
Kelma Farm and Orchard strongly believe in the above certitudes and we are at the forefront in practicing the above to ensure sustainable food security and livelihood is attained to all by all.
