Traders selling tomatoes in Kitui town have expressed disappointment with the rising prices of the commodity. Few customers frequented market sheds at Kalundu market owing to the rise in prices by more than 100 per cent.
Mr Peter Kivindyo told MWINGI TIMES that the number of buyers has deceased. He has sold the fruits at Kalundu market for the last 35 years. The market has also been experiencing shortage of supplies.
Some suppliers have kept away preferring far flung markets such as Garissa.
"The number of lorries that bring tomatoes to Kalundu have decreased. Today, only a few brought tomatoes thus making prices to rise up by up to 100 per cent. Buyers are consequently being put off by the high prices", said Mr Kivindyo.
Another tomato trader named Ms Jennifer Syathi, on her part, said that the shortage of tomatoes in Kalundu market was due to a dry spell being experienced along the banks of Athi River where small scale irrigation farmers grow the product.
