Have you ever wondered what Halloween is all about and why it is celebrated? Today, we shed light on this commonly misunderstood festival especially in African countries.
Halloween originated from the ancient Celtic festivals of Samhain who lived around 2000 years ago in Ireland. In the 8th century, Pope Gregory III designated November 1st as All Saints' Day when known and unknown saints were honored incorporating some of the traditions of Samhain. The evening before bacame known as all Hallow's Eve, eventually evolving into Halloween. Hence, it follows that Halloween has roots in Catholic traditions.
On this night, it is believed that the boundary between the living and the dead became blurred and souls of the dead returned to their hearts. They roam the earth as ghosts and demons. For this reason, the living dressed up in costumes that resemble the spirits so as to trick the demons into believing they are interacting with their own kind. They also lit up cleansing bonfires to keep off evil spirits.
As a result of Halloween having European origin, most people in Kenya, especially the older generations are unfamiliar with it hence do not celebrate it. Some link it with 'devil worship' or a commercialized event that does not align with their cultural practices.
However, the younger generations in Kenya are increasingly embracing Halloween since it is gradually gaining popularity. This is as a result of social media influence and desire to participate in international festivities. Reports show that young people in Kenya especially in urban areas take part in the activities carried out on the night of Halloween in various places in the country.
Some common activities that take place include; trick and treating, carving pumkins, haunted houses, costume parties (they dress in creative costumes and attend themed parties), watching scary movies, apple bobbing and lighting bonfires.
Some of the exciting places to visit during Halloween in Kenya include; The Hub Karen - known for hosting family - friendly Halloween parties, Westgate shopping mall, Village Market mall -known for all Halloween fun activities, Diani beach - known for bonfires and themed decorations and lastly Hell's Gate National Park in Naivasha.
Celebrating Halloween offers a chance for cultural exchange by allowing Kenyans to participate in a global tradition. It also boosts local businesses like costume shops, event organizers and retailers. People also get to express their creativity in unique ways through costume designs and decorations. Furthermore, it unites people and offers a platform for social interaction.
As this spooky festival approaches, it's time for imaginations to run wild and people to have fun. Remember the magic that comes with embracing our imaginations and connecting with others. Let creativity shine. Have a memorable Halloween!!
