A meeting attended by Kitui East MP Nimrod Mbai brought to the fore the sharp divide that exists in the battle for leadership of Kitui County Assembly currently held by the 32-year-old Kevin Kinengo Katisya.
Some MCAs who were opposed to a recent attempt to impeach the Kitui CECM for Treasury Peter Kilonzo, have turned against Katisya and have threatened to impeach him early next year once the assembly sittings resume. The anti -Katisya MCAs who are the majority accuse him of being behind the flopped plan to impeach Kilonzo. They want to punish him by ousting him.
But without giving details, Mbai who is a UDA legislator has linked Speaker Kinengo's woes to former Speaker George Ndoto whom the former dethroned after the August 2022 general election.
"No one should interfere with the work of Speaker Kinengo. We can see what is about to be played. Some people have been in leadership for more than 30 years and they don't want to go home. They will".
"As young leaders in Kitui County, we are not apologetic as we take leadership reigns from the seniors", said MP Mbai.
The speaker elections of 2022 polls were historic that lawyer Kevin Kinengo aged 30, trounced Kanu-era minister George Ndoto who was seeking a third term in office. It seemed Speaker Ndoto did not stand a chance among young MCAs as more than half of them were below 35 years.
"I will offer sound, transparent and firm leadership. I will not let you down", said Mr Kinengo.
