The country's second in command attributed diminishing agricultural output levels in Ukambani and Tharaka Nithi counties to lack of government support in the past regimes stretching since independence.

Addressing a meeting comprised of small traders, women and youth at Kwa Mutonga Primary School in Kitui West constituency, the DP said residents in Lower Eastern region deservey State support in form of favorable policies, financial and marketing aspects of their cereals and fruits. "Pigeon peas are like gold. It is a pricey crop but farmers do not enjoy government support and the return from pigeon is too low. Production has also plummeted because we have not given it due attention", he said while commenting on one of crops produced by millions of people in Ukambani.

The DP further said that he will host 10,000 farmers from the Eastern region in order to explore areas the President William Ruto's government can support them in crop production. "I am planning to hold a meeting in Nairobi next month for farmers from this region so that we can brainstorm with government officers including the Agriculture CS", said Kindiki.

The government has set aside KSh2.1billion for the last mile electricity connection in Kitui County with Kitui West constituency being allocated KSh 201 million.

Kindiki revealed that the government is focused on uplifting local economies in Ukambani region and the rest of the country in order to improve lives of Kenyans while implementing the Kenya Kwanza government's Bottom-Up Economic Development Agenda.
