I will keep working with Ruto for the benefit of my people, Nguna

By PAUL MUTUA

Mwingi West MP Charles Nguna has said the completion of tarmacking of the remaining section of the Kibwezi-Kitui-Migwani-Mbondoni road was one of the conditions he gave President William Ruto as a game charger to “calm political temperatures” in the opposition dominant region ahead of the 2027 elections.

The Wiper Patriotic Front MP said he further demanded for a rural electrification programme to be installed in various villages in his constituency to let the region benefit enormously from development projects and government appointments in equal measure with other regions as part of the deal.

Speaking during a retirement party of a Primary School headteacher, Justus Musyimi Ngau, at Kaikungu village, Migwani Sub County in his constituency, Nguna said he had no apologies to make for choosing to embrace and have a cordial working relationship with Ruto and his Kenya Kwanza administration towards achieving life-changing and transformative programmes for the region he represents.

“I thank the President for committing himself fully in ensuring the completion of the crucial road that stalled at Kwa-Siku in my constituency. A Chinese contractor is setting up a camp at Kathumulani area in Migwani Sub County for the commencement of the works on the Kibwezi-Kitui-Migwani-Mbondoni road that connects Nairobi-Thika-Mwingi-Garrissa road at Mbondoni. In addition, Sh468 million has been allocated for the rural electrification programme in my constituency. I am aware, it is the responsibility of the government to do developments in all parts of the country, but lobbying is also part of the game,” the second term MP said.

He said it was an open secret that sometime back he held talks with the President where they discussed development issues and agreed to partner on significant matters in making people’s lives better.

Nguna said his deal with Ruto should not be construed to mean he has shifted his political allegiance from Wiper to UDA. “Those jittery about my working deal with Kenya Kwanza should relax. I am in Wiper to stay. Even if the party will hold parliamentary nominations in 2027, I will participate and vow I will emerge the winner against all other party aspirants. I know how to play my cards,” he said.

The MP unconditionally said nothing will stop him from meeting the President and charting a way forward for the semi-arid region to achieve maximum benefits of shared resources. He said there is strength and unity of purpose for people to chart a united front and coalesce together for political, social and economic growth in their respective zones.

Nguna called on leaders across the political divide to discard politics of witch-hunt, hatred and bickering and focus on the region’s shared development agenda. “Our people have well-defined priorities, and these will serve as the foundation of our efforts to uplift Kitui and Ukambani at large. It is time for development,” the MP said.

He said key priorities identified included improving roads, enhancing access to clean water, advancing education, expanding electrification, ensuring affordable housing, and boosting progress across critical sectors.

Nguna sought to explain that his desire and vision were primarily to see all county leaders, irrespective of political affiliation, come together at one table to forge a shared common goal for the benefit of the community populace.

“We need to achieve our collective dream of having all our regional leaders irrespective of parties of affiliation come together at a negotiating table to chart a common agenda for our people” the MP said.
