Rival camps fight over Majority Leader seat in Kitui

A standoff ensued in the County Assembly of Kitui when two rival factions of MCAs squabbled over who should sit on the chair of the Majority Party Leader in the House. As this went on, Governor Dr Julius Malombe had been invited to give the annual state of the county address. Other dignitaries present were Deputy Governor Augustine Kanani, County Commissioner Kipchumba Ruto as well as messrs Bonnie Musambi and Moses Banda from State House, Nairobi.

The violent confrontation between rival camps was aimed at removing the Majority Party Leader Harrison Maluki from his seat. Wiper Patriotic Front is the majority party.

Those against MCA Maluki wanted to a new Majority leader to be John Munyoki. Speaker Kevin Katisya acknowledged receiving a letter on the change of the Majority leadership on Monday. He promised to consult with the Assembly Legal Officer on how to handle the looming changes.

In the meantime, neither Maluki not Munyoki occupied the contested seat during the session. Speaker Katisya will give a ruling on who will be recognized as majority leader during the next Assembly session on Wednesday.

Later, Governor Malombe made the much awaited State of the county address as his audience followed him with undivided attention.
