By MWINGI TIMES CORRESPONDENT

Ukambani, long seen as synonymous with drought and historical marginalisation seems to have gotten a development jab on its wrist.

While opinion remains divided on whether the residents really need some projects as other which were regard as basic missed from President's four day development tour, there is still much to laud Kenya Kwanza administration for KSh 110 billion investment.

While addressing over 10,000 grassroots leaders from Kitui,  Makueni and Machakos counties at the Kitui State Lodge on Saturday, President William Ruto expressed optimism that the projects will transform lives of residents.

The government will spend KSh30 billion to upgrade 600km of roads in the region in the first phase after the launch.

The Ruto administration’s Last Mile Connectivity will light up 51,000 households in Ukambani in the next six months.  This is according to a press release from the President's communication team.

Various dams will be completed in order to make Ukambani water secure.  They include Thwake Multipurpose Dam whose KSh 9.6 billion funding was sourced from the African Development Bank.

As for Umaa Dam, the government will spend KSh 230 million to complete it.

A proposed High Grand Falls Dam that will straddle Kitui and Tharaka Nithi county borders is a top priority for the Ruto government. However,  little has been going on on the ground for this.

Limestone deposits in Mwingi region will be extracted for cement manufacturing if President Ruto's promise comes to pass early next year. Already,  the Head of State said he will commission private investor's KSh 40 billion clinker and cement factory then.

The President further directed the Ministry of Roads to begin construction works on the Kyuso-Tseikuru road, saying Kenyans there have suffered dusk and mud long enough.

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki,  Cabinet Secretaries,  and elected senators,  MPs, among other high-profile guests accompanied  President Ruto in his four day development tour of Ukambani region.
