How a Campus Radio Station Became the Heartbeat of Tharaka Nithi

From a modest studio tucked inside Chuka University, voices rise and travel across the hills of Tharaka-Nithi. The hum of microphones, the rhythm of jingles and shatters of presenters fill the waves of Chuka University Radio. What began as a student-led initiative has grown into a vibrant station that informs, entertains, and connects not only the campus but also the wider community.

Every morning, students tune in to hear announcements about lectures, events, and opportunities. By evening, families in nearby villages gather around radios to listen to cultural programs, music, and discussions that reflect their daily lives. The station has become more than a broadcast-it is a heartbeat that carries the identity of both the university and the community it serves.

The radio station was established to give students practical training in media and communication studies. “Here, theory meets practice,” says presenter Vince, a third-year communication student. “We learn how to manage programs, interview guests, and handle live broadcasts. ”It prepares us for the real world.” For many students, the studio is their first taste for professional journalism, and the lessons go far beyond textbooks.

But the impact stretches outside the campus gates. Farmers in surrounding villages rely on the station for weather updates and agricultural tips. Local artisans advertise their crafts, while health workers share advice on nutrition and disease prevention.” I learned how to protect my children from malaria through a program on Chuka radio,” says Mary, a mother from Karingani. “It felt like the presenters were directly talking to us.”

The station also amplifies student voices. Poetry readings, debates and music shows give young people a platform to express themselves. “It makes me proud to hear my classmates on air,” says Collins, a student listener. “It shows that our ideas matter. “The blend of academic content and community programming has created a unique identity: a station that belongs to both the university and the people.

Chuka University Radio is more than a learning tool-it is a bridge. It connects administrators to students, students to staff, and the university to the wider public. Through its diverse programming, the station communicates important academic announcements, public notices, and development initiatives. “It promotes transparency and participation,” explains Dr. Kiboro, a faculty dean. “It gives everyone a voice on matters affecting campus life.”

The station has also become a cultural hub. Programs in local dialects ensure inclusivity, while traditional music and storytelling revive heritage. Elders appreciate hearing their language on air, while youth enjoy modern shows that blend entertainment with education. Economically, the station supports small businesses through advertising, creating opportunities for growth.

During emergencies, the station has proven its worth. When heavy rains caused flooding in nearby villages, presenters broadcast safety instructions and updates guiding families to safer areas. “Without the radio, we would have been in the dark,” recalls elder Muthoni. “It gave us information when we needed it most".

As dusk settles over Chuka, the station’s signal continues to hum across the hills. In dormitories, students laugh at late-night shows; in villages, families lean closer to their radios, listening to familiar voice that carry both wisdom and warmth. For the community, Chuka University Radio is not just a station-it is a lifeline, a classroom, and a mirror of identity.

In every broadcast lies a piece of the university’s soul, and in every listener’s smile lies proof that sometimes, the simplest tools-like a radio-can weave the strongest bonds. Chuka University Radio has shown that when voices are amplified, communities are strengthened, and learning becomes a shared journey.
