Mukunji Opposes Plans to Amend Election Law on Live Streaming of Results

By BRIAN MUSYOKA

Manyatta Member of Parliament Gitonga Mukunji has opposed proposed changes to the election law that would bar the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) from live-streaming election results, warning that the move could undermine public confidence in the electoral process.

Speaking in Embu town while distributing computers to schools, Mukunji said any attempt to introduce changes that could limit transparency in the transmission of election results should be rejected.

The legislator argued that transparency remains a critical pillar of credible elections, noting that Kenyans must have confidence in the systems used to conduct elections and announce results.

Mukunji warned that restricting the live streaming of election results could raise unnecessary suspicions among voters and create doubts about the integrity of the electoral process. "Any attempt to interfere with election laws now is uncalled for. Anything bringing opaqueness in election should be opposed," Mukunji said.

He maintained that electoral reforms should focus on strengthening transparency, accountability and public trust rather than introducing measures that could make the process less open to scrutiny.

The MP called on his colleagues in the National Assembly to reject any proposal seeking to amend the law in a manner that would prevent the IEBC from live-streaming election results.

Mukunji further observed that public confidence in elections is essential for maintaining peace and political stability, adding that Kenyans should be able to follow the process and understand how electoral outcomes are determined.

His remarks come amid debate over the legal framework governing the management, transmission and announcement of election results, with transparency remaining a key issue in discussions about electoral credibility.

The legislator urged Parliament to safeguard the gains made in promoting openness in elections, insisting that any changes to electoral laws should strengthen public confidence in the IEBC and protect the integrity of the country's democratic process.
