Wiper Democratic Movement party boss Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka has withdrawn from the race to be the next Speaker of the Senate.
According to Clerk Jeremiah Nyegenye, Kalonzo wrote a letter confirming his withdrawal. There was a mass exodus of Azimio la Umoja coalition senators from the chambers of the House during the voting.
Former Kilifi governor Amason Jeffah Kingi was elected the speaker with 46 votes.
A senate speaker should be elected with at least two-thirds of votes which is 45 votes. Kingi met the threshold. He was declared duly elected Speaker by Senate Clerk Mr Nyegenye.
