A section of locals from Tharaka ward in Mwingi North, Kitui county could hardly hide their joy after the county government under the Transport Ministry launched opening of new roads in the area.
Tharaka Ward MCA Muthengi Ndagara along Karangeni-Kanyengya road which is being constructed by a doser. This is among the roads being constructed by Kitui County Government in Tharaka. He thanked Governor Dr Julius Malombe for prioritizing the construction of roads in the remote area. All the 40 wards in Kitui county will collectively benefit from grading of 85km road this financial year, said MCA Muthengi Ndagara.
The process is part of a program launched by the County Government of Kitui which would see over 80 kilometers of road repaired and new roads opened in each of the 40 wards in Kitui.
Phillip Githinji, a local said the last time locals saw a doser opening roads was in the year 2004.
Transport across the hilly ward has been a challenge over the years where locals trek tens of kilometres to access the sub county headquarter offices in Nthangani market.
Speaking in Tharaka Ward where he launched the 10Km per Ward bulldozing program to open up the Karangeni market (Gacigongo) - Kanyengya market through Nthangani to Miramba Mitugu access road, Transport CECM Reuben Itiko said the Governor Dr Julius Malombe's administration has put in place strategic plans to guarantee all residents impartial service delivery through equitable distribution of county resources amongst the 40 Wards.
The CECM also added there's a plan to train boda boda operators on safety measures urging them to join cooperatives and saccos in preparation for the exercise.
Area MCA Muthengi Ndangara said the ward only has two passable roads. He is pushing for opening of more roads to ease transport.
