With farmers harvesting mung beans (ndengu) to boost income from livestock keeping, prices remained low. Retailing at only KSh 65 per kilo, the mung beans prices fetch lower than the seeds which were bought for more than KSh 100 at the beginning of planting season.
The only consolation for farmers was in goat market where a large billy fetched as high as KSh 14000 in Tseikuru market. This amount was higher than in Kaningo market which was KSh 10000 the previous day.
Medium sized and small goats fetched less prices depending on if it has fat or fetched higher weight.
Prices of cows remained stagnant compared to the previous market in Tseikuru. A medium sized cow was asked from KSh 40,000.
When MWINGI TIMES toured Kasarani market in Tseikuru town on Thursday, goat sellers lamented that they may have to take back home their animals and wait for the next market. But due to need for cash, most ended up selling their livestock at "throw away prices". They blamed low prices of medium-sized goats to proliferation of middlemen who buy and sell to others. The big business people then transport the livestock to Nairobi and other towns for slaughter or reselling.
