In a concerted effort to commemorate those affected by floods across the nation, the Rainforest Alliance today joined forces with the government to spearhead a tree-planting initiative in Irangi Forest, located in Runyenjes, Embu County. The exercise that was led by Trade, Investment, and Industry Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano, alongside Governor Cecily Mbarire, aimed to not only honor those impacted by natural disasters but also to bolster environmental conservation efforts.

While addressing locals and leaders who had turned up for tree planting exercise, Miano emphasized the importance of planting both shade trees and fruit trees, underlining their dual benefits for the ecosystem and local communities.She said that the government is investing more resources on environmental initiatives calling on locals to support the cause."Let us not just plant trees alone let's think of planting fruit trees because they have double benefits to us," she said.
Her sentiments were echoed by Governor Mbarire who said the county was commitment to meeting and exceeding mandated forest cover targets, ensuring a sustainable future for generations to come.
Ivy Okutoyi, from the Rainforest Alliance team, articulated the organization's ambitious vision for the Mt Kenya Sustainable Landscape Livelihood Program. She said this multifaceted initiative aims at addressing the interconnected challenges of biodiversity conservation, sustainable livelihoods, and forest preservation across Kirinyaga and Embu counties.She underscored the organization's commitment to holistic environmental stewardship, recognizing the intricate balance between human well-being and ecosystem health.
Central to the Mt Kenya Sustainable Landscape Livelihood Program she emphasized on collaboration with local community forest associations saying they play a pivotal role in driving meaningful change at the community level."By engaging with and empowering local stakeholders, the Rainforest Alliance seeks to foster a sense of ownership and responsibility towards forest resources, laying the foundation for long-term sustainability," she noted.
The program's scope extends beyond mere reforestation efforts, encompassing a comprehensive approach to landscape management. Okutoyi emphasized the importance of integrating conservation practices with sustainable livelihood strategies, recognizing the symbiotic relationship between healthy ecosystems and thriving communities.
By promoting alternative income-generating activities and environmentally-friendly agricultural practices, the program aims to alleviate pressure on natural resources while improving socio-economic resilience. "The Rainforest Alliance's initiative aligns closely with broader efforts to restore and protect the delicate ecosystems of the Mt Kenya region by working hand-in-hand with local communities, the organization seeks to mitigate deforestation and promote sustainable livelihoods," Okutoyi said .
Samuel Mbogo who is the chairman of Irangi Community Forest Association lauded the Rainforest Alliance saying it has offered a big support through capacity building on matters environmental conservation and this has strengthened their operations.
