A visit by Kitui County Commissioner Kipchumba Rutto and his security team confirmed this. Speaking to the media on Tuesday, the county security boss called upon police to work hard in restoring security in Ngomeni Ward which is the most affected by the raids.
"I urged the police to ensure sufficient security so that pupils can return to school and continue learning. It is unacceptable for learners to be out of school", said County Commissioner Rutto. He was speaking during a security meeting at Mandongoi trading centre.

The county commissioner assured residents that an operation to flush out armed North Eastern region bandits will he mounted in the area.

Teachers too have registered low attendance to school as they fear for their lives. Mandongoi Primary School head teacher Mr Joel Maundu said that his school has a population of 527 pupils and only seven came to school. He added that only four teachers came to work.

Four other schools in Ngomeni Ward were also closed due to banditry.
Mwalimu Maundu expressed concerns that the learners may not perform well due to their long absence from school. "Incidents of banditry attacks have over the years made pupils in our school to always perform dismally in KCPE. Due to the current disruption, I fear the standard six pupils would perform poorly in the 2024 KEPSEA examination ", he said.
