Kitui County Assembly Deputy Minority Leader Jeremiah Mutua was arrested on Sunday at Nguni. MCA Mutua is also the ward representative for Nguni ward.
Matinyani MCA Sylvester Munyalo who is also the Minority Whip confirmed the arrest saying that a vehicle that was used to ferry the MCA took him to Mwingi police station before further driving him to a police station in Embu county. He said the officers who arrested him were from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations [DCI].
MCA Munyalo claimed that his Nguni counterpart was arrested over matters concerning deteriorating security situation in his ward. Local residents fled their homes after attacks by bandits from the North Eastern region.
There has been reported insecurity incidents along the border of Kitui and Tana River counties.
On Thursday September 5, two elderly men and a young man were killed inside Mwingi Game Reserve. The three were from Somali community, Kyuso sub county police boss Edwin Otieno said. He appealed for calm in the area and urged residents from neighboring Tana River and Kitui counties to volunteer information that will lead to arrest of the perpetrators of the heinous crimes.
Several leaders in Kitui County led by Kitui East MP Nimrod Mbai called for immediate release of the vocal MCA. The UDA MP has in the past been active in fighting banditry in the volatile areas of his constituency and the neighbouring Kitui South.
