Residents of Ngomeni ward in Mwingi North have been urged to be promptly reporting incidents of insecurity in order for police to take immediate action in restoring order. While issuing the advice on Monday, area police boss Edwin Otieno regretted that the area has experienced insecurity for three weeks now where residents have been driven away from their homes by camel herders from North Eastern counties.
A public baraza in Mandongoi trading centre, Ngomeni ward. Residents say the government has a responsibility of protecting them from bandit attacks.
Mr Otieno was speaking in Mandongoi trading centre during a public baraza which brought together local leaders and other residents. The leaders included Kyuso Deputy County Commissioner and Ngomeni MCA Joseph Nzungi Ngwele.
Speaking to MWINGI TIMES, residents said police have been reluctant in taking action when attacks happen.
"We lost cows here at night. When we reported to police, they said they don't work at night. They then started abusing us saying we are also thieves. The matter died at that point. No action was taken. But when a police officer was shot by bandits, the lost cow was found", one resident said.
Another added, "I don't know if we have reached a point where every Kenyan should secure themselves."
