Repositioning Mwea Game Reserve as a tourist destination of choice

Mwea Game Reserve, located in Embu County, is witnessing a surge in tourist numbers ahead of the Christmas holiday season. Renowned for its tranquility and biodiversity, this 42-square-kilometer reserve is gaining popularity among local and international visitors. 
Among its standout features is the presence of Rothschild giraffs, a subspecies that is endangered and rarely seen in other parts of the country. Visitors also enjoy sightings of the rare African bush elephants and Grevy’s zebras. The reserve's location along the Tana River and Kamburu Dam provides a habitat for hippos and crocodiles, while birdwatchers are thrilled by over 200 bird species, including the globally threatened grey-crowned crane.

Mwea offers a unique escape for nature enthusiasts.

Additionally, the reserve's accessibility and affordable entry fees have made it a favorite weekend getaway for locals, sparking an appreciation for conservation efforts.

The County Executive Committee (CEC) for Trade and Tourism, Francis Ndwiga, highlighted ongoing partnerships with local investors and businesses aimed at improving the reserve's infrastructure. These efforts include plans for eco-friendly lodges and community-driven tourism initiatives, reinforcing the reserve's status as a sustainable destination. Ndwiga urged visitors to experience the reserve's diverse attractions, describing it as “a true taste of nature.”

Among the main draws are game drives, birdwatching, and boat rides on the Kamburu and Masinga reservoirs, where visitors can spot over 200 bird species, hippos, and crocodiles. For adventure seekers, the reserve offers camping opportunities at serene sites like Mbogo and Silvester, which provide a rustic charm perfect for an immersive wilderness experience.

Ndwiga while speaking at the reserve said the governor, Cecily Mbarire has fully been supporting all the plans accelerate Tourism activities in Mwea Game Reserve.

He said the governor's good will has seen the reserve realize more vibrant activities in recent days.

"Governor Mbarire is fully support our course and that is the reason why we are able to make this progress,"said Ndwiga.

 Plans to enhance conservation and establish a marketing board aim to bolster visitor numbers while benefiting local communities and preserving the ecosystem.

With increasing awareness and enhanced accessibility, Mwea Game Reserve is set to cement its place as a must-visit destination this festive season. Whether it's the sight of majestic Rothschild giraffes or the tranquil sound of the wilderness, Mwea promises an unforgettable experience.
