Be resilient in adapting to climate change shocks, Met

By JOHN MUSEMBI

As the short rains come to an end, Kenya Meteorological Department, in its latest weather forecast says that all the three sub counties of Mwingi region will have no rains this week. Only the southern sector of the devolved unit are expected to have little rains.

It is against this backdrop that the weatherman advised residents to adapt to climate change. "Community members are advised to inculcate the culture of being "weather-ready", "climate smart" and "water -wise" as we navigate the unfamiliar and chaotic environment of changing climate. This will help adapt to a changing climate while at the same time mitigating the adverse effects of climate change hence becoming more resilient to the vagaries of Climate Change", said Daniel Mbithi, Kitui County Director of Meteorological Services.

The Met Department has been recommending that farmers plant drought tolerant crops like sorghum, cowpeas and millet given Kitui County is a dry region prone to rampant shocks of climate change resulting to food insecurity. The weatherman laments that residents do not follow his advise with some growing maize, beans and other crops that need higher amounts of rains to mature.

Experts say climate change is a long-term shift in temperatures and weather patterns.  This results to climate change causing hotter temperatures, more severe storms, prolonged dry spells, warming and rising oceans, loss of species and increased health risks, a UN advisory on this says.
