Kaluyu in yet another run for presidential seat

By MWINGI TIMES CORRESPONDENT

The race for 2027 presidential seat has gained momentum not just nationally but also in Ukambani. This is after Dr Japheth Kavinga Kaluyu declared he will be vying for the highest office in Kitui town on Saturday.

His party of choice is the little-known We Unified Change Party. We the People Movement is his mantra movement.Kaluyu unsuccessfully vied in 2017 managing slightly above 10,000 votes in a hotly contest race won by the then President Uhuru Kenyatta. His closest challenger was Opposition veteran politician Raila who pulled out of the rerun polls leaving President Kenyatta to win with over 98 per cent of votes.

The Urban Health Policy and Research PhD holder from New Jersey Institute of Technology is joining a fragmented voting bloc given Kalonzo was abandoned by both Raila Odinga and former President Uhuru Kenyatta leaving him to partner with impeached Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Eugene Wamalwa's party Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K).

Kaluyu has not shown the mettle to mount a challenging presidential bid. He has not partnered with other regions for a bigger voting bloc since Ukambani alone cannot guarantee his win.

The former adjunct professor in the USA  seeks to capitalize on his international networks and academic background to transform Kenya. He criticized unnamed political leaders for what he called lack of good leadership. "The leaders we have always had in Ukambani have left us suffering from food insecurity, lack of water and being poor. We have been reduced to waking up every morning thinking about our next meal", said Dr Kaluyu.

Dr Kaluyu further said that in order to boost harvest in dry regions such as Ukambani, leaders should think beyond rain -fed agriculture. "Our undoing is a lack of good leadership. Israel is a desert but they are exporting food. In Ukambani, we get two rainfall modes but we lack food", he lamented.

Dr Kaluyu is banking on Gen Z voting bloc to back his 2027 presidential bid.
