Acts of kindness changing lives of persons living with disabilities in Embu

STORY By MICHAEL MULU

In a landmark initiative aimed at promoting social inclusion and economic empowerment for persons with disabilities, the National Fund for the Disabled of Kenya (NFDK) disbursed economic empowerment equipment valued at over KSh. 4.5 million on Tuesday. The equipment was issued to individual beneficiaries and institutions of learning for learners with disabilities in a ceremony held at the Regional Commissioner’s offices in Embu town.

Speaking at the event, former Kitui Senator David Musila lauded the initiative and urged stakeholders, including the County Government of Embu, the private sector, and the media, to actively participate in the disability inclusion agenda.

“Mainstreaming disability matters is not the responsibility of the Fund alone. It calls for a collective effort. I urge the county government and all sectors of society to step up and support programmes that empower persons with disabilities,” said former Senator Musila.

This critical support falls within the Fund’s broader mandate to foster the social and economic advancement of persons living with disabilities across the country. Through the provision of mobility and rehabilitative devices, vocational tools of trade, and the development of inclusive infrastructure, the Fund continues to pave the way for a more equitable and inclusive Kenya.

The event was hosted by the County Commissioner of Embu Jacob Obuo who reiterated the government’s commitment to working closely with the Fund to support the needs of persons with disabilities.

"Our focus is on ensuring that persons with disabilities are not left behind. We believe that by equipping individuals with the right tools, we empower them to lead independent and dignified lives,” he noted.

The distribution included mobility aids and vocational equipment tailored to meet the diverse needs of the beneficiaries. These tools are essential in enabling recipients to participate fully in the socio-economic fabric of their communities, thereby promoting independence, productivity, and dignity.

Promoting Inclusive Education and Infrastructure

In addition to individual empowerment, the Fund continues to champion inclusive education by supporting infrastructural development in institutions that cater for learners with disabilities. Schools such as St. Luke’s School for the Deaf, ACK St. Monica Embu, Kambungu, and Gatinduri special units have benefitted from critical facilities including dormitories, classrooms, and dining halls.

The Fund also recognizes the importance of health and hygiene in learning environments and has invested in water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) programs within these institutions. These efforts not only enhance the quality of life for learners but also creates conducive learning environments that upholds the dignity and rights of every child.

Advocating for Disability Rights and Awareness

Beyond material support, the Fund plays a pivotal role in advocacy, working to shift societal attitudes and dismantling the stigma that often surrounds disability. By raising awareness and promoting the rights of persons with disabilities, the Fund seeks to foster a culture of respect, inclusion, and equal opportunity.

A Countrywide Mission

This disbursement is part of a broader nationwide initiative. The Fund will continue its empowerment drive across the Central Kenya and Coast regions in the coming days, reaching more individuals and institutions in need of support.

As the Fund rolls out this important programme, it poses a powerful question to every Kenyan: “What have you done to support the person with a disability who happens to be a member of your family, a neighbour, or even a colleague at work?”

This is a timely call to action for all citizens to reflect on their roles in creating a compassionate, inclusive society where no one is left behind. Whether through advocacy, assistance, or simple acts of kindness, every effort counts.
