Women have a right to inherit their parents' property and wealth as men

In today’s modern society, the fight for gender equality is more prevalent than ever before. Women all around the world are breaking barriers and achieving great successes in various fields.
In many African traditional set ups, women and girls are disadvantaged when it comes to land rights including inheriting their own parents' estates unlike men and boys.|COURTESY

However, one aspect where gender equality still lags behinds is in the inheritance rights of girl children. Traditionally, inheritance laws have favored male heirs, often leaving girl children with little or no claim to their parents’ properties and wealth. This practice is not only unfair but also perpetuates gender inequality and reinforces harmful stereotypes about the worth and capabilities of women.
It’s time to change this outdated and discriminatory practice and ensure that girl children are given the same rights as their male siblings when it comes to inheritance.

By allowing girl children to be included in their parents’ properties and wealth, we can create a more equitable society that values the contributions and potential of all individuals, regardless of their gender.

There are several reasons why it is important to include girl children in inheritance laws. Firstly, inheritance is often a significant source of financial security and stability for individuals and families. By denying girl children their rightful share of inheritance, we are putting them at a disadvantage and limiting their opportunities for success and financial independence.

Secondly, including girl children in inheritance laws, promotes gender equality and challenges harmful stereotypes about women’s worth and capabilities. When girl children are treated as equal heirs, they are more likely to be empowered and encouraged to pursue their dreams and ambitions without any limitations based on their gender.

Furthermore, allowing girls to inherit their parents’ properties and wealth can help to break the cycle of poverty and empower them to create a better future for themselves and their families.

In many societies, women are the primary caregivers and breadwinners and by giving them access to inheritance, we can help to uplift entire communities and promotes economic development.

It is also important to recognize that gender equality is not just a women’s issues; it is a human right issue that affect us all. When girls are denied their inheritance rights, it sends a message that their worth is less than that of their male counterparts and perpetuates harmful gender norms and stereotypes.

There have been positive developments in recent years towards ensuring equal inheritance rights for girls. In many countries, laws have been amended to include provisions that mandate equal inheritance rights for all children, regardless of their gender. However, there is still much work to be done to ensure that these laws are effectively implemented and enforced.

Education and awareness are key to bringing about positive change in inheritance laws and promoting gender equality. By educating communities about the importance of including girls in inheritance rights, we can help to shift attitude and values towards a more equitable and inclusive society.

In conclusion, allowing girls to be included in their parents’ properties and wealth is not just a matter of fairness; it is a fundamental human right issue that must be addressed. By empowering girls through equal inheritance rights, we can create a more just and equitable society that values the contribution and potential of all individuals, regardless of their gender.

It is time to take a step for gender equality and ensure that girls are given their rightful place in society. Let us work together to break down barriers and create a world where all children, regardless of their gender, have the opportunity to thrive and succeed.
