Kangaru School in Embu County is regaining its former glory, thanks to a remarkable performance in the 2024 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams. Under the astute leadership of Chief Principal Paul Muriuki, the institution recorded a mean score of 7.1, a significant leap from the 6.5478 score achieved in 2023. This resurgence marks a proud moment for the school, rekindling its reputation as a centre of academic excellence.
Two students, including Muthoni Caleb Ng'ang'a, emerged as top performers, scoring an A plain. Ng'ang'a, who garnered 82 points, could not contain his excitement as he celebrated this milestone alongside his peers. “It’s a dream come true. The discipline, hard work, and the support from our teachers made this possible,my dream university is the University of Nairobi where I want to pursue a Bachelor's degree of Medicine and Surgery,” he remarked during the jubilant celebrations.
The improved performance wasn’t limited to the top grades alone. The school saw an impressive distribution of grades with eight students earning A-, 21 securing B+, and a considerable number achieving B, B-, and C+ grades required to pursue higher education in the universities.
The school attributed this success to a combination of hard work, discipline, and a strong sense of teamwork. “We focused on creating a supportive environment where every student could thrive. This involved not just academic rigor but also personal mentorship and moral guidance,” Mr Basilio Mugo, the deputy principal explained. He said the school's strategy of personalized mentorship and strengthened teacher-student relationships has evidently borne fruit.
Kangaru School’s journey to academic revival is further highlighted by its rich history. Established in 1947 by Sir Robin Wainwright, the institution has been a beacon of educational excellence in the region. Its motto, “Serve and Lead,” continues to inspire both current students and alumni, many of whom have gone on to make significant contributions in various fields.
The resurgence of Kangaru School is also credited to the unwavering support from parents and the local community. Their active involvement in school activities has played a pivotal role in creating an environment conducive to learning. This collaborative effort has not only boosted the students’ morale but also reinforced the importance of education within the community.
Beyond academics, Kangaru School has consistently excelled in co-curricular activities. In the 2024 Kenya National Drama and Film Festival, the students showcased their artistic talents, further enhancing the school’s reputation. This holistic approach to education ensures that students are well-rounded and prepared for future challenges.
Looking ahead, Kangaru School aims to sustain and surpass these achievements.According to the school plan, it will introduce innovative teaching methods and expand co-curricular programs to provide a holistic education that emphasizes both academic excellence and character development. This forward-thinking approach is expected to further elevate the school’s standing.
