Speaking to MWINGI TIMES, the residents were at first upbeat that they will get some food to alleviate the hunger pangs following widespread failure of the last season's harvest.

The fallout has left in its wake unpredictable dietary struggles. "I sent my wife to go take the donations. She only got a kilo of maize and half kg of beans", said Fred, a resident from Kalimbui sub location.

Earlier today, we established that the price of mung beans or ndengu which are cash crops has deteriorated. It is retailing at Sh90 this week, a dip of Sh30 compared to the previous week.

The small-scale farmers are largely exploited by brokers and lack pest control and storage facilities that would have been strategic enough to dictate price taking.
