24 schools closed in Kitui county over incompetence

By JOSPHINE MWENDE

After the Ministry of Education conducted an investigation in all primary day and boarding schools, a multi-agency team from the national government came up with numerous schools that don't fit the standards of boarding schools in Kenya. This resulted in a directive for immediate closure for these schools from the ministry. Following these directives, 24 primary schools in Kitui county have fallen in this category.

Dr. Khalif Issack, the director of education Kitui county, speaking to the press narrated that, among these 24 schools in the county, 12 are not registered under the ministry of education in the county and they will stay closed until they register and qualify to continue in the education sector.

The rest of the schools, Dr.  Khalif said they are registered, but they lack the necessary boarding facilities needed to be allowed to accommodate pupils.

"According to the PS education, these schools are not totally closed. The government ordered the closure of the boarding wing only. Therefore, the other classes should continue as usual come next year." Dr. Khalif clarified.

The government under this ministry gave these schools the recommendations to put in place for them to qualify to be boarding schools. Among these are, boarding infrastructure, (toilets, washrooms, spacing of the beds in the dormitories), general sanitation of the school, fire equipments in the school to ensure the pupils are safe incase of fire accidents.

"These investigations came after what happened in Nyeri, and these are some of the things the government is looking for, and they should be implemented before 6th January 2025." Dr. Khalif stated.

On top of that, Dr. Khalif urged parents who have children with disabilities to try and take them to school, which are set to accommodate such pupils because the county has a large number of kids with disabilities but few are registered in schools.

"These schools for the pupils with disabilities ordered to be closed but they are registered under this ministry include; Mutha School For The Deaf, Mutomo Special School For The Deaf and Kyatune primary and junior school but those kids who study in those school should go back to school as the institution tries to update its environment to the required standard." Dr. Khalif urged.
