Bring It On, Senator Mundigi Dares DP Over Ouster Bid

By BRIAN MUSYOKA

Embu Senator Alexander Mundigi has thrown down the challenge to the Democratic Party (DP), vowing to fiercely resist attempts to expel him over his role in campaigning for United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate Leonard Wa Muthende during the recently concluded Mbeere North Constituency by-election.

Mundigi confirmed that he was formally notified of the expulsion move about a week ago while on official duty in Uganda, a development that could potentially trigger a senatorial by-election should the process succeed. Unfazed, the senator dismissed the move as politically misguided, insisting he committed no offence by supporting Muthende.

He maintained that DP remains part of the ruling Kenya Kwanza coalition and that no formal decision has been made to sanction its exit. "As far as I know, DP is still in Kenya Kwanza. There has been no lawful or official resolution to leave the coalition,” Mundigi said, arguing that the accusations against him lack both legal and political basis.

Speaking during a mass wedding ceremony at ACK Church in Mbuvori, Nginda Ward, Manyatta Constituency on Saturday, December 20, 2025, Mundigi dared the party to proceed with the ouster bid, declaring he was fully prepared for a political and legal showdown.

“Those dreaming of a senatorial by-election are simply daydreaming.I was elected by the people of Embu, and they gave me a clear five-year mandate," Mundigi said.
The outspoken senator said he would not hesitate to challenge the expulsion in court if necessary, insisting that internal party processes cannot be abused to undermine the will of the electorate.

In a sharp political jab, Mundigi accused former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua of being the invisible hand behind the plot, claiming the scheme is part of a wider plan to reconfigure regional politics.

He alleged that Gachagua is deliberately working to weaken and dismantle other political parties in the region to pave the way for the dominance of his Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP). According to Mundigi, such maneuvers threaten political pluralism and undermine democratic competition in Mt Kenya East and beyond.

At the same time, the senator defended his decision to campaign for Leonard Wa Muthende, saying his actions were guided by leadership merit rather than party allegiance. “This was never about party lines. It was about supporting a candidate with the ability, vision, and capacity to deliver for the people.”
Mundigi’s defiant stance now sets the stage for a high-stakes political and legal battle, one that could test party discipline, coalition politics, and the limits of internal democracy within Kenya’s evolving political landscape.

Agriculture Ministry Emerges the Best in Kitui County

By BONIFACE MWANIKI

The County Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock emerged as the winner of the highly coveted Governor Malombe’s Performance Contracting Award for the 2024/2025 Financial Year, in the award ceremony  ceremony held at the Kitui Teachers Training College on Friday.

While addressing the media at the venue, CECM in charge of Agriculture Dr. Mbaya Kimwele attributed the win to team work, promising to digitize all agricultural services to enable quick access to extention services by farmers.

However, the Ministry of Youth, Gender and Social Services led by Phoebe Mutemi was ranked the worst, emerging position 12 out of 12.

The County Ministry of Basic Education, Training and Skills Development, led by Ms. Masila, emerged second, while the Office of the Deputy Governor, led by H.E. Augustine Kanani, took third place.

This initiative entrenches a culture of enhanced transparency, accountability, and timely responsiveness in the public service. While announcing the results, Kitui Governor Dr. Julius Malombe challenged the ministries “to own their targets, innovate through collaboration, and serve with integrity.”

According to governor Julius Malombe, the winners will receive one-quarter of their January basic salary, the second position will receive one-eighth of their January basic salary, while the third position will receive one-twelfth of their January basic salary.

Performance Contracting is domiciled in the Office of the Deputy Governor, and for three consecutive years, it has topped the list in ensuring “what gets measured”.

Kitui County Issues Stern Warning Over Illegal Donkey Slaughter as Festive Demand Rises

By JOSPHINE MWENDE

The Kitui County Government, in partnership with animal welfare organisations and the national government, has issued a stern warning to business operators involved in the illegal buying and slaughtering of donkeys, cautioning that decisive legal action will be taken against offenders.

Speaking during a press briefing on 18 December 2025 at his office, the Kitui County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Agriculture and Livestock Development, Dr Stephen Mbaya Kimwele, raised concern over the resurgence of the outlawed donkey slaughter trade, particularly during the ongoing festive season when meat consumption is high.

Dr Mbaya noted that Kitui County currently has an estimated donkey population of about 160,000 animals, according to recent data. He emphasised that donkeys play a critical role in the livelihoods of many residents, especially in the arid and semi-arid areas of the county, where they are widely used for domestic chores such as fetching water and transporting goods, as well as for income-generating activities. “Donkeys are a lifeline for many households in Kitui. They support daily survival and contribute significantly to the local economy. Any threat to their welfare is a direct threat to the wellbeing of our people,” Dr Mbaya said.

He recalled that last year the county experienced alarming levels of illegal slaughter, with close to 100 donkeys reportedly being killed daily by unscrupulous traders. The practice not only led to widespread theft of donkeys but also heightened insecurity among residents.“These incidents were at their worst last year. Through sustained operations, we arrested suspects and arraigned them in court, which significantly reduced the cases,” he explained.

However, Dr Mbaya warned that the illegal trade has recently resurfaced, with donkeys being sourced from various parts of the county, including Mwingi, Kitui Rural and Kitui West. The animals are reportedly transported to markets such as Kithyoko, where they are slaughtered clandestinely in nearby forests. The meat is then supplied to urban centres and sold to unsuspecting consumers.

In collaboration with the national government and organisations such as Caritas Kitui, the county has intensified surveillance and enforcement. Dr Mbaya confirmed that several suspects have already been arrested in recent operations, a move he said has helped curb the vice.“Some criminals were slaughtering donkeys in forests, selling the meat locally and trafficking the skins to external markets. Our joint efforts have disrupted these networks,” he stated.

Ambrose Musyimi, an officer with Caritas Kitui, underscored the importance of public cooperation in combating the illegal trade. He warned that donkey meat is often sold fraudulently as other types of meat, posing both ethical and public health concerns.
“It is only through cooperation between citizens and authorities that we can stop these incidents and safeguard donkey welfare,” Mr Musyimi said, urging residents to report any suspected cases.

The county government has appealed to the public to remain vigilant and report instances where large numbers of donkeys are being transported without proper documentation or clear destinations. Such cases, residents were advised, should be reported immediately to the nearest police station.

As the festive season continues, authorities have reiterated their commitment to protecting donkeys and preserving their vital role in the lives and livelihoods of Kitui residents.
